Unprecedented action was taken by both the State and Federal Governments yesterday in response to the coronavirus pandemic, says a Press release from South Australian Tourism Commission (SATC), attributing the statement to its Chief Executive Rodney Harrex.
According to the Statement, the Premier of South Australia Steven Marshall decided to effectively close South Australian borders to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the state, and has declared the State of Emergency. This decision relates to non-essential travel and takes effect from 4 pm Tuesday 25 March.
The Prime Minister last night announced further actions to support social distancing measures and protect the Australian community from the spread of coronavirus, which included restrictions to pubs, registered and licenced clubs, hotels, restaurants and cafes.
Harrex also mentions that these decisions will have a monumental economic impact on the tourism sector and businesses, but he ensures the public of continually working with the Premier to provide him and the SATC Board with the most up-to-date information on how this crisis is affecting the tourism sector.
Harrex pointed out that the $66 billion economic support package announced by the Prime Minister includes support for households including casuals, sole-traders, retirees and those on income support; assistance for businesses to keep people in a job, and regulatory protection and financial support for businesses to stay in business.
The statement also mentions that the Australian Banking Association (ABA) is working with banks to implement a small business relief package. The package will allow for the deferral of principal and interest repayments for loans to small businesses, in all sectors, impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pointing out that the closure of Australia’s domestic borders will require a refocusing of the SATC’s entire domestic and international marketing strategies, Harrex sought input for Regional Visitor Strategy, as well as for broader international plans.
Ensuring safety and support to all, Harrex said his team will be there to help get people back supporting the tourism sector, to make it stronger than it was before.
