A court in South Africa has ordered tourism minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane to temporarily halt processing and making payments from the Tourism Equity Fund (TEF) until the matter is finalised.

The injunction follows an urgent application heard on 15 April 2021, brought by Afriforum and Solidarity who are opposed to the TEF.

Kubayi-Ngubane said she would abide by the ruling.

The TEF seeks to drive transformation through advancing equitable opportunities in the sector to ensure inclusive economic growth.

The fund recognises that the capital-intensive nature of the industry is preventing new and existing black-owned tourism enterprises from meaningfully participating in and contributing to this sector.

By providing access to finance for black-owned commercially viable tourism projects, the TEF is intended to address one of the major challenges to the transformation of the tourism sector.

AfriForum and Solidarity branded the fund “a racial tourism fund” when they sought interdict.
