Russian Tourism to Turkey Up 5% in Summer 2024, but Still Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

The number of Russians vacationing at Turkish resorts in the first eight months of 2024 increased by 4.6% compared to the same period last year. The three summer months demonstrated a higher growth rate of 6.9% compared to 2023 figures. In August, this figure increased by 10.2% when prices for holidays in Turkey decreased slightly.

Overall, according to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, 35.8 million foreign tourists visited the country in the first 8 months of 2024, which is 7.1% more than in the same period last year. The top three countries were Russia (over 4.55 million tourists), Germany (4.38 million tourists, which is 7.4% more than last year's figures), and the United Kingdom with 3.1 million tourists (which exceeded the 2023 figures by 17%).

However, Turkish authorities believe that it is too early to talk about "restoring the Russian tourist flow to Turkey to pre-pandemic levels": for example, the tourist flow to Antalya is still 31.6% behind the 2019 figures.

Of the total Russian tourist flow to Turkey, 58% this year accounted for resorts in the province of Antalya (2,641,849 visits by Russian citizens). The share of the Turkish Aegean coast was 6.1% (278,465 visits by Russians). Istanbul, preliminarily, accounted for about 30% of the total tourist flow from Russia to Turkey from January to August (1.35 million visits), with most of these visits being transit in nature (stopover on the way to third countries or back). About 6% of the tourist flow went to other regions of Turkey - Mersin, Izmir, land border crossings with Georgia and Bulgaria, and Black Sea ports.
