The discussion sessions of the 27th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change are currently taking place in Egypt. The speaker at one of them was Vladimir Zhukov, Vice President for Investor Relations and Sustainable Development at MMC Norilsk Nickel.
As part of the Energy Transition session, he spoke about the risks and opportunities that arise in connection with climate change and the global energy transition.
The company's long-term sustainable development strategy responds to the following challenges: reducing harmful environmental impact and creating comfortable living conditions in the regions where it operates, as well as establishing an effective climate risk management system.
Thus, an analysis of climate change in Norilsk and its environs was carried out to adapt to climate risks; a multi-level system of geotechnical monitoring of buildings and structures was created (target - 1,500 objects in the NDP); the implementation of the ambitious investment project "Sulfur Program" began, the goal of which is to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions in Norilsk by 90%.
In addition, Norilsk Nickel is actively developing social programs, such as the renovation of Norilsk until 2035 with a total budget of 120 billion rubles, of which more than 80 billion is the company's participation. Including support for the indigenous peoples of the North and the FPIC procedure.
Vladimir Zhukov also stressed that the climate agenda is one of the important issues in the global economy. Thus, Norilsk Nickel has developed three long-term development scenarios up to 2050. They will be used for planning and risk assessment during the global energy transition.
Norilsk Nickel is one of the world's largest producers of green metals such as nickel, copper and cobalt. They are critically needed for the production of electric vehicles and the development of energy infrastructure.
