The project by students from Sochi Gymnasium No. 44 was presented at the "Green Tourism in the Sochi Resort City" competition and received a special prize from the Rosa Khutor resort for its implementation. The main goal of this project is to restore, strengthen, and popularize the memory of the Great Patriotic War events, immortalized in obelisks and memorial signs installed at sites of military glory in the vicinity of the city.

"Preserving historical heritage is one of the important areas of the Rosa Khutor resort's sustainable development program. Here, on the mountain passes, battles of the Battle for the Caucasus took place. The heroes, whose names Sochi streets bear, did not let the enemy reach the sea. Military signs and obelisks remind us of their feat today. Most of them were installed by enthusiasts: first by veterans, then by search teams, local historians, and those who wished to perpetuate the memory of these events and the people who participated in them. Many of these obelisks remain little known, are located in hard-to-reach places, and need care and preservation. The project of the students of Gymnasium No. 44 will help to rectify this situation," said Dmitry Kolosov, Director of Sustainable Development at the Rosa Khutor resort.

The schoolchildren's initiative includes collecting and systematizing information about the history of war obelisks and signs in the mountains of Sochi. Based on this data, the students will develop an online resource and an interactive map with information about the events to which the memorials are dedicated, their location, history of creation, and accessibility. In the summer, they will conduct expeditions to the obelisks to see the sites of historical events, assess the condition of the memorial sites, and carry out on-site repairs or plan for future ones.

"Patriotic education plays an important role in the educational process. As part of their project, students in grades 8-11 have already visited the Sochi History Museum, collected information about war obelisks, and begun creating an open online resource. Our school also has strong tourism traditions. To implement the idea, hiking trips to the war obelisks will be organized. We plan to follow well-known routes - No. 30 and No. 9. The support of the Rosa Khutor resort is very important to us, within the framework of which the school will, among other things, receive the necessary tourist equipment," shared Margarita Korneva, Director of Sochi Gymnasium No. 44.

The project is launching in the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory and is intended to become permanent, reviving the traditions of the search and tourist movement that existed in Sochi.

"Such school projects not only help children learn about history but also preserve the memory of the heroism of the defenders of the Fatherland and develop cognitive interest in local history. We very much hope that the idea of the students of Gymnasium No. 44 will be embraced by other educational institutions in the city and will become a model for the patriotic education of the younger generation," emphasized Elena Galishcheva, Head of the Museum of the History of the Sochi Resort City.

The 1985 photograph shows a traditional May hike for Sochi residents on the eve of Victory Day to a war obelisk at the fork of tourist trails of the Aishkho-1 and Aishkho-2 passes.
