During the extended Romanian winter break for students, mountain rescue services have seen a surge in calls for help from young skiers. This year's challenging weather conditions in the Romanian mountains, characterized by heavy snowfall, poor visibility due to frequent fog, and strong winds, have exacerbated the situation.
The first Sunday of January proved particularly challenging, with a significant increase in incidents. According to the Mountain Rescue Service, they received 167 emergency calls on that day alone. The highest number of calls came from the Predял mountain resort, near Brașov.
Rescuers carried out 180 evacuations, setting a new daily record for Romanian rescue services. Nearly 120 injured individuals were transported to hospitals. A rescue helicopter was required to save four students.
Additionally, the rescue service received numerous calls for advice on how to handle emergency situations. In total, Romanian mountain rescuers responded to over 1,300 incidents during the winter break.
In light of these events, the Romanian National Dispatch Center is urging tourists to exercise caution and responsibility when visiting mountainous regions during the winter.
