The press service of the Kenozero National Park has announced the discovery of a new fern species, Botrychium lanceolatum (lanceolate moonwort), during botanical field research near the village of Maselga. This species had not been previously recorded in the national park.
Botrychium lanceolatum is a rare species and is listed in the Red Data Book of the Arkhangelsk Region. The main threat to its survival is human economic activity. This plant can be found in the Onega, Mezen, Pinega, Verkhnetoemsky, Kotlas,Lensky, Shenkursky, and Kholmogorsky districts of the region.
In the Kenozero National Park, the moonwort was found on the side of a forest road on sandy soil. Scientists recorded a total of 8 plants.
The report notes that this species of fern develops underground for several years thanks to mycorrhiza - a symbiosis of plant roots and fungal mycelium. It has limited reproductive capabilities through spores.
