The RAEX rating agency has published its first thematic study in 2025, dedicated to the effectiveness of water resource management in Russian companies. The analysis is based on data from 144 participants in the agency's ESG ranking for the past year.
As a result of the study, the companies were divided into five groups. The first group, which unites the leaders in the level of rational water use, included such companies as Alrosa, KazMunayGas, MMK, Norilsk Nickel, Polymetal, Polyus, Rosneft, Rusal, Uralkali, and PhosAgro.
RAEX analysts note that 60% of the companies in the ESG ranking have a low level of rational water use. The average score of the study participants was only 35 out of a possible 100. This is due to the weak disclosure of information on the financing of water use activities and a lack of attention to verifying relevant data.
Despite this, the implementation of water conservation measures allows companies to reduce water consumption, which is a positive factor. This gives hope for a gradual improvement of the situation in this area.
The most efficient industries in terms of rational water use are telecommunications and the mining and metallurgical industry. The average score of companies in these sectors exceeds 50 points.
Agricultural enterprises were among the organizations with the lowest indicator for managing water use risks. This is due to the specifics of the industry and the consumption of large amounts of water resources.
