In anticipation of data for the current year, 2023 presented Portugal with a record figure. This small country with a population of ten million, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, was visited by more than 18 million foreign guests.
This is 19% more than in 2022, and 11% higher than in the pre-pandemic 2019.
The United Kingdom continues to be the leader in the number of travelers traveling to Portugal. It is followed by Germany, Spain, France, the USA and Canada.
Portuguese authorities are seeking to benefit from the tourism sector, which accounted for almost 15% of the country's gross domestic product before the pandemic.
Plans to build a new metropolitan airport and a high-speed railway line between Lisbon and Porto are designed to contribute to the Government's aspirations.
