The famous Wilhelmina Tower in the city of Valkenburg suddenly collapsed for unknown reasons. It is also unknown if there are any victims. According to the mayor of Valkenburg, Daan Prevoo, the collapse occurred early Sunday morning, when the tower was still closed to visitors. Therefore, the authorities do not expect any casualties. However, two search dogs signaled that someone might be under the rubble.
The 30-meter neo-Gothic Wilhelmina Tower, built in 1906, was known for its trendy restaurant and a popular tourist observation deck. The cause of its collapse will be investigated by the regional civil protection agency. Currently, the version of the collapse due to underground tremors recorded at 5 a.m. by the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute is being considered.
Daan Prevoo stated that the destruction of the tower is a blow to all citizens of the city. After all, Wilhelmina was to Valkenburg what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris. The ruins of the historic building attracted many people who wanted to take selfies against the backdrop of the ruins. The city authorities urged tourists not to visit the collapsed building, and the area was cordoned off.
