Pompeii Limits Visitors to Prevent Further Damage

To prevent further deterioration of the city buried under volcanic ash in 79 AD, restrictions have been imposed on visits to this unique archaeological site.

Last year, Pompeii was visited by over 4 million people, a 33.6% increase compared to the previous year. And on the first weekend of November, traditionally free for tourists, Pompeii was visited by 36,000 people, which exceeded the usual average by almost 3 times.

This is unacceptable for an ancient city, where excavations are still ongoing. At the request of scientists, the number of visitors will now be limited. The daily number of tourists should not exceed 20,000 people, which corresponds to the population of ancient Pompeii before its destruction. At the same time, no more than 15,000 visitors are allowed in the archaeological park at the same time.

The introduced restrictions have already come into force. According to Pompeii director Gabriel Zuchtriegel, reducing the load on the ancient site is necessary for its safety. Tickets can be purchased in advance on the official website of the Pompeii archaeological park. The cost of visiting is 18 euros.
