Slovak motorists have been besieging gas stations in Poland since February, where they fill hundreds of thousands of liters of gasoline and diesel fuel cheaper than in Slovakia, euractiv.fr reported.
In response, Poland decided to introduce border control in order to check whether the Slovaks are transporting an excessive amount of fuel. According to the law, no more than four 60-liter cans of fuel outside the gas tank can be in a car crossing the border, provided that the cans comply with EU standards.
In the current situation, a number of owners of Polish gas stations have reported that they have already run out of fuel, as a result of which they even had to temporarily close.
Gasoline and diesel fuel in Poland are cheaper by about 25-35 cents per liter due to the decision of the authorities to reduce VAT on these energy carriers as an anti-inflationary measure. With a 50-liter fuel tank, Slovaks can save from 10 to 18 euros.
Residents of Slovakia are not the only ones who travel to neighboring countries to buy cheaper car fuel and food. A similar trend is observed in the Czech Republic and Germany.
Meanwhile, the Association of Gas Stations in Germany has already warned that German gas stations near the border with Poland may go bankrupt due to a wave of fuel tourism.
