The press service of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute reported the launch of an important point of the state system of background monitoring of the state of permafrost on Wrangel Island in the Chukchi Sea. The well is equipped near the meteorological station of the Chukot Hydrometeorological Service, which makes it possible to track changes in the state of permafrost in conjunction with observations of the climate and to close a significant gap in data on the thawing of permafrost.

"Together with observation points on Wiese Island, the Новосибир Islands, Severnaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land, the system forms a high-latitude Arctic transect, allowing for comprehensive monitoring of the dynamics of changes in the cryolithozone in the high latitudes of the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation," the message says.

The press service noted that data on the structure and temperature regime of frozen soils provide valuable information for designing the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route and coastal territories, as well as for checking the condition of existing industrial, energy and social facilities.

At the moment, within the framework of creating the State System of Background Monitoring of Permafrost, more than 20 observation points of the cryolithozone are operating on the territory of Russia, including the northernmost point on Hayes Island of the Franz Josef Land archipelago and the southernmost point on the border with Mongolia. By the end of this year, scientists will receive data on the state of permafrost from 78 wells from seven constituent entities of the Russian Federation. In 2025, the system will unite 140 points throughout the entire area of permafrost occurrence.
