The Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), held annually in the Californian city of Santa Barbara, often referred to as the American Riviera, attracts hundreds of industry professionals and tens of thousands of moviegoers. In 2025, it will run from February 4th to 15th.
“For 11 days of the festival, over 200 films are screened for 100,000 viewers. The program includes independent and foreign films, as well as documentaries and edgier works by your favorite directors,” notes the tourism portal Visitcalifornia.com.
SBIFF has been held since 1986 and is considered one of the leading film festivals in the US. Its goal is to discover and showcase the best in independent and international cinema.
The festival's grand opening, which requires a ticket, is open to the public and takes place in downtown Santa Barbara.
"After the screening of the premiere film at the Arlington Theatre, which seats over 2,000 people, the party moves outside where drinks, dancing, and live music will be in order until late in the evening," the portal notes.
In the following evenings, a series of public events dedicated to celebrities will take place.
The portal names the main event of SBIFF as a fundraising gala honoring the recipient of the Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film. The funds raised go, in particular, to various educational initiatives of the festival.
"This evening invariably attracts A-list celebrities, making it truly star-studded. Recent award winners include Hugh Jackman, Warren Beatty, Judi Dench, Jane Fonda, and Robert De Niro. Tickets to this event are available to the general public but are expensive," the statement says.
The Kirk Douglas Award is presented several months before the festival itself.
This time, the award went to comedian Will Ferrell. The ceremony took place on December 11th.
As reported on the festival's website, the main program will feature tributes to world-famous celebrities who have won SBIFF awards. In February, there will be award ceremonies for Angelina Jolie, Timothy Chalamet, Ralph Fiennes, Adrien Brody, Guy Pearce, Kieran Culkin, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, and many other artists.
Santa Barbara is located about 140 km from Los Angeles on the Pacific coast. Due to its subtropical Mediterranean climate, it is called the American Riviera, similar to the French Riviera.
