Norilsk Nickel, which has been cooperating with the Pasvik, Laplandsky and Kandalaksha nature reserves, discussed the interim results of their joint work at a coordination meeting dedicated to preserving biodiversity and improving the state of ecosystems.
According to the company's press service, one of the tasks is to create a first-of-its-kind metric for assessing the state of ecosystems in different territories.
"If there is no single formula, you cannot assess the state of the environment. We want to offer an integrated indicator that can be used in any territory, in any climate zone. This will be a universal formula to reference the calculated state of the environment in any given place," said Stanislav Seleznev, Vice President for Ecology and Industrial Safety at Norilsk Nickel.
With the company's support, the Kandalaksha Nature Reserve conducted a comprehensive expedition across the territory of the Murmansk Tundra Reserve. The researchers created descriptions and route records, noted medium and large mammals, and collected herbarium samples for further work.
Students of environmental departments assisted scientists in their work. An aerial drone was used in the expedition to count wild reindeer in the Lapland Nature Reserve.
