At the annual general meeting of the Nicosia Tourism Board, Cyprus Deputy Minister of Tourism, Kostas Koumis, highlighted the need to develop rural and regional aspects of the tourism industry.
"With the right actions to promote cultural heritage, develop rural tourism and support local communities, Nicosia can become a model that combines urban and regional tourism, offering every visitor a full range of experiences while simultaneously protecting the local community and the environment," stated Kostas Koumis.
He also noted that the country's tourism sector has "demonstrated remarkable resilience." According to the Deputy Minister, the growth of tourist arrivals to Cyprus this year reached 4.6% compared to the same period last year, thus setting "a new record for the number of arrivals, which sends optimistic signals for the future."
For the further development of sustainable tourism, Mr. Koumis considers it necessary to create a more developed system of connections between urban areas of Nicosia and the surrounding regions, capable of offering travelers unique historical and natural attractions.
"Supporting the sustainable development of mountainous and rural areas, as well as the old part of Nicosia, is a priority for both the government and the Ministry of Tourism, and every policy is now intertwined with the green transition and digital transformation. Therefore, it is necessary to unite everyone who makes up the tourism ecosystem, including local authorities, to transform our country into a modern, sustainable, and attractive tourist destination with respect for the environment, cultural heritage, and local communities," emphasized Kostas Koumis.
