Bloomberg has reported the opening of a new international airport in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, which is also the island's most populous city. This new transportation hub will allow for an increase in the number of arriving tourists, as many will now be able to fly directly to the capital.
The Danish Civil Aviation and Railway Authority has announced that the runway is 2.2 km long. It was approved for operation after a series of test flights. Inspectors noted that the runway is safe for flights, however, according to regulations, inspections will continue in the coming months.
Before the new airport opened, international flights landed further north in the secluded town of Kangerlussuaq. To visit the capital of the world's largest island, tourists had to use domestic airlines. Now, larger aircraft can land in Nuuk. It is planned that next year direct flights will be launched from Newark, Copenhagen, and Iceland's largest airport, Keflavík.
Passenger traffic is expected to double and exceed 100,000 people per year. Bloomberg notes that last year, slightly less than 65,000 people arrived in Greenland by air.
