The press service of the Ministry of Ecology and Nature Management of the Moscow Region has announced that specialists have updated the list of objects of the animal world inhabiting the region. The list now includes more than five thousand species of animals.

Scientists have collected and analyzed information about new finds and encounters in the region, the majority of which were invertebrates. The list includes 76 species of mammals, 305 species of birds, 11 species of amphibians, 7 species of reptiles, and 4759 invertebrates.

Compared to last year, the list has been supplemented with 129 species of invertebrates, information about the habitat of which on the territory of the Moscow Region appeared in scientific publications and catalogs over the year.

"The new list includes 16 species of ticks, mosquitoes, gall flies, bugs, as well as the necessary changes in connection with the clarification of the taxonomy of invertebrate species," the message says.

In addition, the list now includes the giant scolia - one of the largest species of insects in Russia, discovered by entomologists in Lukhovitsy in 2018. Now this Hymenoptera is a candidate for inclusion in the Red Book of the Moscow Region.

The updated list of objects of the animal world of the Moscow Region is an important tool for preserving biodiversity in the region. It will be used to develop measures for the protection of animals and their habitats, as well as for environmental monitoring.
