The official website of the Mayor of Moscow reported that seven million people visited the capital during the recent New Year holidays. This is one and a half times more than the previous year. This figure is also 7% higher than in 2019-2020, when 6.6 million people visited Moscow.
Approximately 50% of tourists spent a full winter vacation in the capital. Mostly, guests arrived in Moscow at the end of the year - December 28-30, and left the city between January 5 and 8. Among the travelers were residents of other Russian regions and tourists from Armenia, Belarus, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, China, UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and other countries.
The most visited places during the holidays were Red Square, Manezhnaya Square, GUM, Nikolskaya Street, Arbat, and VDNKh. Events within the framework of the "Winter in Moscow" project were in high demand. Tourists participated in master classes and quests, visited festival venues, ice rinks, and ski slopes.
The average occupancy rate in three- and four-star hotels during the New Year holidays reached 90%. The peak values were on January 3-4. Compared to the previous season, the hotel revenue from room sales during the holiday period increased by an average of 30%.
"In general, the contribution of tourism to Moscow's economy during the New Year holidays is estimated at 136.8 billion rubles, and the volume of revenues to the city budget is 18.7 billion rubles. This is 1.5 times more than the previous winter season in comparable prices," the message says.
