Nine species wintering in this area are listed in the Red Book of Russia. Among them is a unique small cormorant.
“This bird is a waterfowl, but it has a very poorly developed coccygeal gland, which produces a secret that protects the bird feathers from getting wet. Therefore, they have adapted to dry their feathers mechanically - they spread their wings in the sun or the wind and spend several hours like that, ”said Artem Gordienko, chief specialist of the scientific department of the Natural Ornithological Park.
Ornithologists note that the number of birds this year is comparable to last year. There is enough food base for everyone, the migratory menu includes underwater and coastal vegetation, invertebrates and fish. The wintering season of birds on the Black Sea coast begins in the second half of November, their maximum number will be at the end of January, and in April the birds will again set off for their permanent habitats.
