Norilsk Nickel, together with the Ministry of Natural Resources, will be engaged in the conservation and restoration of the polar bear population. At the Clean Country forum, a cooperation agreement was signed by Vice President of Norilsk Nickel Andrei Grachev and Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecology Sergei Yastrebov. The document states that the company will develop and implement a biodiversity conservation program. It includes work with polar bears, which Yastrebov called "everyone's favorite symbols of the Arctic.»
The first project will be an aerial survey of these animals on Wrangel Island. Specialists will use aerial vehicles with a long range. The deputy head of the department is sure that the project with a total cost of 20 million rubles will bring results.
«We pay serious attention to environmental protection. Along with programs to modernize production and introduce new technologies, the company is implementing projects in the environmental sector. For many years we have been providing support to specially protected areas located in relative proximity to the production sites of Norilsk Nickel,» Andrey Grachev emphasized.
«The agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia is our common decision to support activities aimed at the conservation and restoration of certain rare and endangered objects of the animal world.»
