Less than 450.000 people visited in 2021 the famous Inca city of Machu Picchu, temporarily closed to tourists from late January to early March, the Ministry of Culture of Peru reported.

Last year the attendance of the tourist pearl of the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic was only 29.7% of the level of 2019, when more than 1.5 million tourists visited the Inca citadel.

In 2020, Machu Picchu received only about 275.000 visitors. Currently, daily visits to the ancient settlement are limited to a little more than 3.000 people.

More than 2 million cases of COVID-19 have been registered in Peru, more than 203.000 residents have died since the beginning of the pandemic.

Machu Picchu, whose name in the Inca language - Quechua - means "old mountain", was built during the reign of Emperor Pachacutec (1438-1471). Opened in 1911 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, the city is located a hundred kilometers from Cuzco, the former capital of the Inca Empire in southeastern Peru.

The cult settlement of the Inca Empire, which dominated western Latin America for a century before the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, is located on a rocky spur at an altitude of 2,400 meters above sea level.
