The Ministry of Culture of Peru announced the closure of the famous Inca citadel Machu Picchu due to the tense situation in the country.

During the protests against the removal from power and arrest of President Pedro Castillo, 46 people were killed in clashes with law enforcement forces.

Authorities have declared a state of emergency in several regions of Peru, including the country's main city of Lima and Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire, located 110 km away from Machu Picchu.

The railway, which is the only way to get to the citadel, was damaged by protesters who dismantled the rails. For this reason, at least 400 tourists, including 300 foreigners, are stuck in Machu Picchu.

Tourism revenues account for 3-4% of Peru's GDP.
