The dream of establishing a ferry connection between the Bulgarian city of Burgas and the Turkish city of Istanbul has been deferred for five years. The idea to connect these two major tourist destinations by sea was conceived by the Turkish shipping company IDO back in 2019. However, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic prevented the realization of these plans.
Nevertheless, the concept proved so enticing that the tourism community has been eagerly anticipating the launch of ferry services between the Turkish and Bulgarian coasts for five years. Finally, tickets for a demonstration tour scheduled for October 11-13, 2024, were sold out. Participants were promised a comfortable sea voyage on a 440-seat high-speed catamaran, a tour of Istanbul's historical sites, various tourist attractions, an overnight stay in a luxury hotel, and a five-hour return journey to Burgas. The cost of this pleasure was only 29 euros.
Unfortunately, the weather intervened this time. On the eve of the cruise, a storm raged in the Black Sea: a strong northern wind raised waves, creating a stormy situation. After analyzing the meteorological conditions, the management of IDO concluded that it was impossible to carry out the planned journey under such conditions.
The company has promised to fully refund the cost of the canceled trip. The next attempt to organize a Burgas-Istanbul-Burgas cruise has been postponed to 2025.
