The round-the-world expedition on an inflatable sailing trimaran "On the way of Russian round-the-world navigators" (Kruzenshtern, Litke, Bellingshausen and others) starts on July 1, 2021 from Kronstadt from Petrovskaya pier. According to the organizers of this unprecedented international project, it was from there that all the first Russian round-the-world expeditions of the 19th century started.
Navigators are members of the Russian Geographical Society: expedition leader, Russian traveler, researcher and scientist Evgeny Kovalevsky (Tomsk), trimaran captain, Russian sailing tourism champion Stanislav Berezkin (Novosibirsk). They will go on a sailing inflatable trimaran designed by the USSR champion in water tourism Anatoly Kulik.
Travelers plan to go live to talk with schoolchildren and students as part of the Lessons from the Ocean project. This should become a "live" educational program, the most active participants of which will be able to sail in a trimaran in the Baltic Sea after the ship returns to St. Petersburg.
According to the head of the coastal headquarters, executive director of the Tomsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society, Yulia Kalyuzhnaya, two trial sessions have already taken place from Kronstadt. More than one thousand sites on the basis of schools and universities in all regions of Russia are ready to join the lessons.
“We are planning to organize the next lesson on August 18, the Day of the Geographer. Presumably the crew will be in the French region. This will be the first "lesson from the ocean". It will be dedicated to the Great Geographical Discoveries. A group of geographers is already working on a script, the crew will present video content and answer questions, ”she said.
Schoolchildren and teachers can ask their questions to travelers on the expedition website right now. From July 1, an interactive map of the trimaran voyage will start working, which will provide information not only about the crew's way, but also about historical events associated with Russian round-the-world voyages.
The result of the trip should be a cruising range record. In addition, the members of the expedition plan to conduct scientific activities, in particular, to measure the background radiation of the Earth. "We will measure the radiation background of the planet. Along the entire route - which is 60 thousand kilometers, about one and a half of the perimeter of the Earth - every 20-30 kilometers. By the end of the expedition we will provide a map," Kovalevsky emphasized.
It is planned that students of Tomsk University will arrive at certain stages of the expedition. They will take part in the process of studying the distribution of radio waves over the oceans. Upon their return, students will write a term paper or master thesis, Kovalevsky said. The members of the expedition also intend to remind the world that it was largely discovered by Russian travelers.
During the voyage around the world, travelers will collect video material, which should form the basis of a series of documentaries about the natural resources and beauty of the ocean and about people from different countries.
The vessel received the name "Russian Ocean Way". The name was not chosen by chance. The project participants intend to repeat the sailing routes of famous Russians: Ivan Kruzenshtern, Yuri Lisyansky, Otto Kotzebue, Vasily Golovnin, Fedor Litke, Faddey Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev.
The voyage will last for 2 years. The travelers of the Russian Geographical Society will visit more than 40 countries and territories. The design of the vessel allows access to all yacht harbors in the world. The route of the round-the-world expedition will pass through the waters of the World Ocean.
The trimaran was assembled at the Lomonosov shipyard in the Leningrad region. Its width is 7.6 meters. A spacious tent will become the home for the participants of the circumnavigation.
The project "Along the Way of Russian Seafarers around the World" is dedicated to the 250th anniversary of the birth of Kruzenshtern and the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica by Russian sailors. It is being implemented with the support of the Russian Geographical Society and the Presidential Grants Fund. The scientific supervisor of the project was the Honorary President of the Russian Geographical Society, academician Vladimir Kotlyakov.
