The Kamchatka falconry center appeared in Kamchatka, near the Kronotsky Reserve. According to the Committee on Ecology of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, on behalf of the head of state, an International Center for the Reproduction and Preservation of Rare Species of Birds of Prey was established there.
According to the committee, in the spring of 2022, 83 birds were brought to the center, so far five chicks have been born. Specialists managed to create conditions under which chicks in falcon pairs are born naturally - this is a rare case for nurseries. The plans include the creation of an educational cluster in the center.
According to the head of the committee, Dmitry Kobylkin, in addition to biodiversity conservation and the restoration of the bird population, “the task of the falconry center is to counteract poaching, which in many ways caused a sharp decrease in the number of white gyrfalcon in Kamchatka.” In a media comment, he emphasized the importance of the fact that the center is located near the Kronotsky Reserve, the natural habitat of the gyrfalcon. According to environmentalists, this will allow, by returning birds to nature, to include additional protective mechanisms that operate in specially protected natural areas.
The Kamchatka Falconry Center has also become the starting point for the implementation of the ornithological program for the conservation of rare bird species.
The committee also reported that the KOMPAS Foundation for the Support and Development of Ecological Initiatives and the Timiryazev State Biological Museum signed an Agreement on scientific and methodological support for the restoration of rare bird species in Russia.
On the eve of the Eastern Economic Forum, the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and Norilsk Nickel signed an agreement on holding falcon conservation measures in 2022-2023 with funding in the amount of 50 million rubles
