The Greek tourism industry has already felt the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine: financial losses from the cancellation of hotel reservations by citizens of Russia and Ukraine are estimated at 700 million euros.

"We have already cancelled 600,000 bookings from Russia and 240,000 from Ukraine," said Lissandros Tsilidis, president of the Union of Tourist Operators of Greece.

The conflict in Ukraine will significantly affect the attendance of the island of Crete, where 10% of the tourist flow traditionally accounted for Russians and Ukrainians.

"There will be no replacement for this customer base," complains Nikos Halkiadakis, president of the Union of Hotels of Heraklion, the administrative center of the largest Greek island.

Another problem is rising prices. They have increased by 70% for energy, and by 28% for food and beverages.

Nevertheless, the Greek tourism industry hopes for a better summer season than last year.

In order to stimulate foreign tourism, which accounts for almost 25% of Greece's GDP, the country's authorities began in February to lift restrictions imposed in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic: passing tests at the borders is no longer mandatory for travelers with a European vaccination certificate.

From May 1, a sanitary pass is no longer required in restaurants, bars and shops. As for protective masks, from June 1, wearing them indoors will no longer be mandatory.
