The press service of the Kronotsky Nature Reserve has reported that visitors to the Valley of Geysers now have an increased chance of witnessing a grand eruption of the Grot geyser. In terms of the volume of hot water ejected, this Kamchatka giant ranks second in the world, following the "Steamboat" geyser in Yellowstone National Park in the USA.
Previously, the largest geyser in the Kronotsky Reserve erupted very irregularly and was widely recognized as one with very rare eruptions. However, several months ago, the eruptions of Grot began to stabilize, and this year, the geyser has been erupting weekly.
Reserve staff note that eruptions still occur unexpectedly and cannot be predicted. Therefore, witnessing a powerful jet of boiling water shooting up to 65 meters into the sky will still be a significant achievement for tourists.
To obtain accurate data on the eruption patterns of Grot, researchers installed loggers on the geyser in September 2023. These sensors record changes in water temperature at the outlet. Specialists will take readings this September to gather information on the frequency and duration of eruptions. Based on this data, they will attempt to make initial forecasts about future peaks of the geyser's activity.
