During a working visit to Pechenga District, Murmansk Region Governor Andrey Chibis inspected a number of social and industrial facilities in the municipality.
The governor visited the smelter site in Nikel where renovation is planned, examined a wall with the historical inscription "Death to the German invaders" discovered during the demolition of old industrial buildings, and descended into the main adit of the Kaul-Kotselvaara mine, which will become one of the key locations of the Pechenga District tourist cluster.
The "Second School" center presented the development program for the future tourist cluster to the head of the region.
Andrey Chibis also assessed the changes in the educational infrastructure in Nikel. The Pechenga Polytechnic Technical School is also going through a period of significant changes: it is being transformed and updated both inside and out. The technical school participates in the federal program "Professionalism" and cooperates closely with Norilsk Nickel, whose divisions also operate in the Pechenga District. The educational institution, where mainly young people from the Pechenga District study, is updating laboratories and workshops, and facade renovation is currently underway. Students are already working in the updated "Electrical Installation" and "Sheet Metal Processing" workshops, and renovations have also been completed in three educational laboratories.
All of this is provided for by the socio-economic agreement between Norilsk Nickel and the government of the Murmansk Region.
"As we travel through the settlement, we see how it is changing: facades have been renovated, lighting improved, and historical buildings have been given architectural lighting. All this is changing the appearance of Nikel, making it more interesting. As part of the agreement with Norilsk Nickel and the "Professionalism" program, new laboratories have been opened and the facade is being actively repaired. In Nikel, as in Zapolyarny, the necessary transformations are taking place," said Andrey Chibis.
As the head of the region noted, over the past five years, more than 80 houses and courtyards of more than 80 houses have been repaired, 15 spaces under the "Arctic School" program, and 25 children's sports grounds. Work is also continuing on public spaces as part of a partnership with Norilsk Nickel.
"The agreement has been signed and is being implemented. Zapolyarny and Nikel are the areas of presence of the Kola Mining and Metallurgical Company. And together we are making sure that life here is changing," emphasized Andrey Chibis. "Despite all the difficulties and the decrease in budget revenues, we are trying to fulfill the obligations we have undertaken."
