The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has updated its travel advice for India, cautioning citizens against traveling to the state of Rajasthan, except for essential reasons. The cause is the ongoing tension on the Indo-Pakistani border, despite the ceasefire announced on May 11th.
Rajasthan — India's largest state, known for its palaces, forts, and desert landscapes — borders Pakistan to the west. The French Foreign Ministry also advises against travel to the neighboring states of Punjab, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, as well as the union territory of Ladakh.
Although around 30 airports, temporarily closed due to four days of fighting, including Jodhpur, Srinagar, and Amritsar, have resumed operations, French authorities warn of the risk of new disruptions and flight cancellations. Delays are also being recorded at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi.
Rajasthan is traditionally one of the key destinations for French tourists. Before the pandemic, India welcomed over 700,000 French citizens annually. In 2022, the number of visits increased to 120,282, representing a growth of almost 300% compared to the previous year.
French travelers are advised to monitor official sources and avoid regions bordering Pakistan.
