Faced with a massive influx of tourists and a housing crisis among its residents, the Italian city of Florence is preparing to introduce new measures to limit excessive tourism.
Among them is a ban on the use of keyboxes - door safes in which owners leave keys to apartments for short–term tenants. Access to housing through a key box attached to the entrance to the building has become a common practice for many travelers.
Starting in 2025, keyboxes with codes that allow tourists to pick up keys without meeting the owner will be banned in the historic center of Florence, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The prohibitive measure is aimed at combating depopulation: the practice of short-term rentals makes it difficult for Florentines to access housing.
In 2023 Florence was visited by 9 million tourists.
