Wildfire ravaged parts of the Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) in Cape Town last week, according to the South African National Parks (SANParks).

The fire flared up due to strong winds.

It said the fire at the Newlands Ravine which spread to the front face of the mountain has since been contained in areas including those that were inaccessible to firefighters.

While the Redhill fire was tentatively contained on 26 February, there was a flare-up later and three new fires.

These fires have been contained but fire suppression activities are still ongoing, said SANParks.

It said the Platteklip Gorge and Kloof corner trails are now open to the public for hiking but the  Maclear’s Beacon and Devil’s Peak to Newlands remain closed.

SANParks said all trails in Newlands Forest are closed including Rhodes Memorial and Block House.

The organisation had previously raised concern over the continued presence of hikers in areas that had been closed off due to fire damage and active fire operations.

“We urge the public to strictly adhere to all trail closures for their safety,” said SANParks.
