The press service of the Kaliningrad Zoo announced the relocation of a female Baltic gray seal to the capital. The animal will have to spend a month in quarantine. The staff of the Moscow Zoo will teach her how to take fish from human hands and determine how peacefully the female can coexist in her new seal group.
Last year, an emaciated and dehydrated seal was found on the beach in Svetlogorsk. The animal was about a month old at the time. The female weighed about 11 kilograms. Employees of the Kaliningrad Zoo took her for rehabilitation. At the same time, three more seals from the wild were admitted for rehabilitation, after which they were released into the Baltic Sea.
However, with regard to the female, another decision was made - to transfer her to Moscow.
"During the rehabilitation, the female did not gain weight well and lost several teeth due to an infectious disease. Experts came to the conclusion that in this state she is not able to survive on her own in nature, because she will not be able to hunt - grab and hold her prey. In addition, this animal is more accustomed to humans than all the rest," the message says.
Last year, a modern complex for keeping pinnipeds was opened at the Moscow Zoo. It is possible that a female seal from Kaliningrad will share one pool of this complex with a spotted seal named Tanya, who was brought to Moscow from the Seaside Rehabilitation Center for Marine Mammals "Tyulen". Tanya was rescued by employees of the "Seal" at one time. However, the spotted seal completely lost its sight, so it was impossible to return it to nature.
