A scientific and expert council on the preservation and development of the Losiny Ostrov National Park has been established in Moscow. Leading Russian specialists in flora and fauna, as well as environmentalists, have joined the council. This was reported by the Moscow Department of Nature Management and Environmental Protection on its website.
The council will take part in the implementation of the park's long-term development strategy.
"Together with the scientific community, the city will contribute to the preservation of the population of animals and plants on the territory of the park, as well as participate in the development of educational projects for a wide audience," the statement says.
One of the tasks of the council is to draw up a long-term plan for the protection of the flora and fauna of the national park.
"The council will deal with assessing the size of the fauna and developing recommendations for maintaining a comfortable environment for the inhabitants of the Losiny Ostrov National Park. In addition, the scientists are tasked with preparing proposals for the preservation of the unique flora, as well as for the scientific and methodological support of activities to protect the biodiversity of this natural territory," the department noted.
Experts will also provide advisory support to government agencies.
"Among the proposals that are planned to be submitted are the creation of innovative systems for monitoring the moose population using GPS and artificial intelligence technologies," the statement says.
The co-chairs of the scientific and expert council were Natalia Lukina, professor, director of the Center for Forest Ecology and Productivity of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), and Sergey Naidenko, professor, director of the A.N. Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution of the RAS.
The members of the council include Nikolai Sobolev, senior researcher at the Institute of Geography of the RAS, editor-in-chief of the Red Book of the City of Moscow, representatives of RAS institutes, Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, RUDN University, other educational and scientific institutions, as well as heads of environmental public organizations.
