On May 26, in the Altaisky Reserve (Republic of Altai), the XVI volunteer expedition "Following the footsteps of the snow leopard" started in its habitats on the Chikhachev Ridge. It consists of two employees of the reserve and 10 volunteers.
The expedition is held as part of the celebration of the Day of the Snow Leopard. This was reported on its website by the Association of Reserves and National Parks of the Altai-Sayan Ecoregion.
The expedition members are faced with the task of checking and replacing camera traps and collecting genetic material. The head of the expedition, senior researcher of the Altai Biosphere Reserve Sergey Spitsyn gave a detailed briefing on the specifics of the passage and dangerous phenomena that may lie in wait on the routes. The fact is that on the Chikhachev Ridge, due to the protracted and cold spring, there is snow hiding safe paths, the likelihood of avalanches remains, and inattention and carelessness can lead to tragic consequences. The specialist reminded the participants about a possible encounter with bears and about the rules of conduct in such a situation.
According to one of the most experienced participants, Dmitry Pushkarev, who are quoted in the association's message, the main goal of the expedition is to monitor the snow leopard in the transboundary territory.
“But still, this is not only research, but also some kind of help. Precisely because the snow leopard is the top of the pyramid, and, taking care of it, we descend to ibexes, and argali, and insects, and plants ... So to speak, from small to great, and, probably, this cannot be divided, he added.
