Leaders of the European tourism industry, brought to their knees by the coronavirus pandemic, called on the head of the European Commission to put pressure on EU governments to abandon national quarantine restrictions in favor of coordinated measures at the European level.

"This chaotic situation requires your direct personal involvement," says the letter to Ursula von der Leyen, signed by representatives of more than 5,000 companies in the aviation, tourism, hotel and restaurant sectors.

"What is really at stake is the recovery of Europe and national economies," the authors of the message emphasize, reminding that tourism generates 10% of the EU's GDP.

Earlier, ACI Europe, the professional Association of European airports, sent a letter to Brussels complaining that, as of mid - September, the total number of air passengers decreased by 73%, and in August-by 65%.
