The European Union has temporarily removed Algeria from the list of States whose citizens are exempt from restrictions to travel to EU member States due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the EU Council said in a statement.
Currently, the list is reduced to 11 countries plus China - on the condition of reciprocity. The list is being updated for the second time since it was compiled a month ago, when it numbered 14 States.
Today they are Australia, Canada, Georgia, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Rwanda, South Korea, Thailand, Tunisia, and Uruguay. Algeria was removed from the list after Serbia and Montenegro. Russia is not yet classified as a safe country in terms of epidemiology.
The list, which is subject to review every 15 days, specifies the States for which entry restrictions should be gradually lifted. At the same time the recommendations are not binding: each EU member is responsible for those travelers that it allows to enter its territory.
Meanwhile Brussels is trying to coordinate the actions of national governments to preserve freedom of movement within the borders of the Schengen area.
Despite the fact that the UK has left the EU, until the end of the transition period on December 31, it is considered a member of the community.
In Algeria, in the third decade of July, a record number of cases of coronavirus infection was registered for this country - 675 in one day. The number of deaths is already approaching 1200 people.
