Ecologists suggested creating a special "reserve of orchids" near Novosibirsk. About 20 years ago, a biology teacher from the village of Linevo, Yuri Panov, discovered a place where orchids grow en masse. The territory is located in the Iskitimsky district of the Novosibirsk region on an area of about 40 hectares. He compiled the first list of orchids, which included 13 species.
Today, Siberian scientists continue to explore this place, as it is unique in terms of the species diversity of orchids. However, the territory does not belong to protected areas, therefore, it became necessary to organize protected areas and biomonitoring. In this regard, employees of the Siberian Botanical Garden of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the expert group of the Open Laboratory of Conservation Biology conducted a study to prove the value of the territories.
«Most of the orchid species in Russia are rare and listed in the Red Data Books; 30 species of the Orchidaceae family grow in the Novosibirsk Region,» said Alexander Dubynin, head of the Open Laboratory for Conservation Biology.
The field research resulted in the expansion of the territory of the "orchid reserve" to 335 hectares. Scientists believe that it is necessary to organize a botanical reserve in this area and introduce regulation of the land use regime. They also noted the need to organize biological monitoring of plants that are on the verge of extinction.
