As the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia reported on its website, a wild Amur leopard cub, found alone near the borders of the Land of the Leopard National Park in Primorye, after a course of treatment, “moved” from the quarantine box to the spacious aviary of the Rehabilitation Center. Here it will be able to live in more comfortable conditions, as close to natural as possible.
“A four-month-old Amur leopard cub was discovered and rescued by employees of the Land of the Leopard Federal State Budgetary Institution outside the national park, where the core of the world’s only population of the rarest cat is located. Experts suggest that the cub could fight off its mother due to natural phenomena - a river flood, a mudflow, and it could also be left without care as the weakest cub. In an exhausted state and with wounds, he was handed over to veterinarians,” the ministry said in a statement.
The weight of the leopard at that time was only 4.5 kilograms - like a domestic cat. After providing first aid, the leopard cub was placed in a quarantine block. Thanks to the careful care of specialists, the kitten's condition has improved, the wounds have healed. He quickly gained weight.
“Before the release, the rescued leopard was vaccinated against viruses. To train hunting skills, several small rabbits were placed in the enclosure with him. This will help the animal to develop the skills of surveillance, hiding,” the message says.
Observation is carried out with the help of video cameras and camera traps, which recorded that after opening the doors of the quarantine box, the leopard immediately went to explore the territory of the large enclosure.
The Far Eastern leopard is the rarest big cat in the world and one of the rarest animals on the planet. According to recent research, there are 121 Amur leopards in Russia.
