Egypt realised between $3.5 billion to $4 billion from tourism revenue in the first half of 2021, according to a senior government official.
The North African country raked in about $4billion in 2020 from tourism revenue down by 70% from $13.03 billion in 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Egypt’s deputy tourism minister Ghada Shalaby was quoted by Reuters as saying that the country also received about 3.5 million tourists in the first six months of the year and they are expecting more.
“We are expecting that numbers of tourists will increase by 45% to 60% during the next period compared with last year,” she said.
The tourism industry usually accounts for up to 15% of Egypt’s gross domestic product.
