Demoiselle cranes were ringed and returned to their natural habitat in the Black Lands biosphere reserve in the Republic of Kalmykia. This was reported by Rosprirodnadzor on its website.
With the permission of the department, in order to study the migration routes of birds, the staff of the reserve caught the chicks by putting plastic colored and engraved rings on their paws. Feather samples were also taken from cranes for research purposes.
“The demoiselle crane is listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation. According to the observations of the staff of the Chernye Zemlya Reserve, the number of these graceful birds has been declining in recent years. The reasons for the decline in the population, scientists call degradation of habitats (a decrease in the number of available watering places and plowing of the steppe), as well as cases of poaching of birds in their places of migration and wintering - the countries of the Middle East and East Africa," Rosprirodnadzor noted.
They stressed that today it is important to carry out activities to maintain the life support of Demoiselle Cranes in their nesting areas. This will contribute to efficient breeding and an increase in the bird population.
