The ancient city of Perperikon in the mountains of Bulgaria has received international recognition. It is among the ten most interesting archaeological sites in Europe. Well-known European and American publications describe its significance for Europe as comparable to the value of Machu Picchu for South America.
The Bulgarian Perperikon is 6,000 years older than its Peruvian counterpart. The rock city in the eastern Rhodopes was founded by the Thracians in the 5th millennium BC. Even in prehistoric times, it became a place of communication between people and gods, remaining a cultic site for millennia.
Today, visitors to Perperikon can come here at any time. Here they are awaited by the ruins of an ancient city that once adorned the top of the hill. Every year, archaeologists working here discover new pages in the history of this spiritual center of antiquity. Thus, recently scientists discovered here a place that Herodotus described as the abode of the god Dionysus, where pilgrims flocked to meet with the oracle of the god of wine.
Due to the growing popularity of the European "Machu Picchu", archaeologists hope for increased funding for further study of the ancient Perperikon. And the Ministry of Tourism of Bulgaria seeks to create all conditions for history lovers to comfortably and safely visit the ancient city.
