According to a ranking by Forbes, Plovdiv has surpassed Vienna, the Canary Islands, Champagne, and Courchevel in travelers' preferences for celebrating the New Year. In a survey conducted by the tourist organization European Best Destinations, which compiles the annual Forbes ranking, over 100,000 respondents took part, with many voting for spending the winter holidays in Plovdiv.
"Plovdiv, the oldest city in Europe, with its captivating blend of history and modernity, is a favorite tourist destination all year round. Ancient landmarks and the Old Town with its cobblestone streets and charming architecture create a romantic backdrop for celebrating the New Year," Forbes reports. And it's hard to disagree with that.
During the Christmas and New Year's festivities, the city looks magical: the streets shine with lights, a decorated Christmas tree stands in every neighborhood, festive markets are open, and musicians perform. In recent years, an ice rink has been operating in the central square. Additionally, this year, on December 25th and 31st, Plovdiv's public transportation will be free for all passengers.
