The count of the brown bear on the spawning streams was completed in the Kurilsky nature reserve on the island of Kunashir. Researchers and state inspectors of the reserve carried out accounting work during the period of mass spawning of salmon species from September 7 to October 28.
The main task of specialists is to identify each individual animal. This can be done by following the tracks, using photo-traps on the banks of the rivers and by directly observing the animals in their feeding places.
According to the data received, the number of bears living in the reserve was 89 individuals. Among them are four cubs of the year. So called cubs under the age of one year.
In the course of accounting work, 14 main watercourses of the reserve, which are the spawning grounds for salmon fish, were surveyed. According to the calculated data, 48 predators were recorded in the Tyatinsky (Northern) area, and 41 predators in the Alyokhinsky (Southern) area.
