Blueberry cultivation has officially begun in Sochi, with the first significant harvest yielding 320 kilograms at a farm in Vardane. This farm spans 30 hectares and also grows various stone and pome fruits that thrive in the subtropical climate, including persimmon, feijoa, peach, plum, fig, kishmish grapes, honeysuckle, and blackberries.
Andrey Proshunin, Head of Sochi, highlighted the potential of subtropical agriculture in the region. "Last year alone, the resort's farmers grew 117 tons of exotic fruits and berries," he stated. "We provide necessary support to farms and private growers in line with the city's agricultural development strategy until 2035."
This season, local farmers plan to produce 17.5 tons of fruit and berry products. By the end of the year, they expect to harvest an additional two tons of Sochi blueberries, six tons of peaches, half a ton of blackberries, two tons each of grapes and figs, and five tons of feijoa. Once the orchards reach full production, the harvest is projected to increase by an average of 2.5 to 3 times.
