The state nature reserve «Swan Islands» in the north-west of Crimea will hold the annual work on the registration and ringing of chicks. According to the researchers of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “Zapovedny Crimea”, already today we can note the increase in the number of the cormorant, black-headed gull and black-headed gull by more than 2 times. But the accounting work is not finished yet - perhaps there will be changes.
The Swan Islands were formed more than a hundred years ago as a result of the erosion of the sand spit by the sea in the Karkinitsky Gulf of the Black Sea. The swans, which gave the name to these sandy seashell shoals, peacefully coexist with many noisy gulls. Herons and the black-headed gull, listed in the Red Book, feel great here. The pink pelican can also be seen there. The islands are also visited by turukhtans, terns, ducks, gray geese, swallows, larks, blackbirds and wagtails. In summer, there are up to 100 thousand birds on the islands, and at the peak of migratory stops, up to one million birds.
