As of January 1, 2025, all public transportation in the Serbian capital has transitioned to free service for passengers. Any resident or foreign tourist can take advantage of this service. To date, this is the only European city with a population of over 1 million people that has decided on such a social program.
Currently, you can travel to different parts of Belgrade by bus, trolleybus, or tram. There are only 7 trolleybus routes here. The most common type of public transport is the bus fleet, which serves 118 lines. All bus stops in Belgrade are numbered and integrated into a mobile service system. To get information about the movement of any route, it is enough to send a request from a smartphone.
However, the tram depot of the Serbian capital cannot boast such a modern information system. But it is distinguished by an amazing variety of operated cars. Here you can see new models of the Spanish rolling stock manufacturer CAF, more traditional Czech "Tatra" and very old German trams donated to Belgrade by the Swiss Basel. Which is reminded by the donor inscriptions on the old cars. True, it will soon be impossible to ride such an antique.
According to the mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Shapic, the entire public transport fleet in the city will be modernized this year. Shapic said that as a result, there will not be a single vehicle in Belgrade that is older than two years.
The city administration hopes that this will lead to a reduction in harmful emissions and improve the environmental situation in the Serbian capital.
