The pink Elafonissi Beach, located on the Greek island of Crete, has been named the "best of the best" in 2025 by the American travel website Tripadvisor.
In addition to its unusual sand color, caused by specific algae, Elafonissi also boasts a unique ecosystem. Rare plant species can be found here: sea daffodils bloom on the sand dunes, and in shady areas, the yellow "scorpion forget-me-not," a local variety of violet, hides.
Elafonissi is also a paradise for amphibians and reptiles. In the moist crevices, the Balkan green lizards and Turkish half-tailed geckos live. Some areas of the beach are frequented by the famous loggerhead sea turtles, where they also lay their eggs. The spots where the turtles nest are fenced off and prohibited for visits. The entire island and its surroundings are protected by the EU ecological network "Natura 2000."
Nevertheless, Elafonissi is a popular tourist destination. During the peak beach season, it's not always possible to find a free sunbed, and prices for them are higher than in other parts of Crete. The beach's newly earned status as the best in the world will further increase interest in this unique place, which could turn Elafonissi into another victim of overtourism.
