The press service of the Irkutsk Region government announced the establishment of a new natural monument, "Argarakan Cave," located in the Kachugsky District. It is situated in the northern part of the Onotskaya Upland between the Angarak River and its right tributary, the Marikta Stream.
The importance of protecting this unique natural complex was highlighted by comprehensive ecological assessments. Scientists have also created a geological and geomorphological profile of the cave. The new natural monument encompasses a cave with passages extending over 8.5 kilometers and reaching depths of up to 57 meters.
Three rare species of animals listed in the regional Red Book have been recorded within the territory of Argarakan Cave. These include three species of bats: the long-tailed bat, Ikonnikov’s bat, and the large tube-nosed bat. These animals are highly sensitive to changes in their environment, making the protection of their habitats crucial for maintaining the region's biodiversity.
