As part of the Cooperation Agreement between Norilsk Nickel and the Association of the Kola Sami, the company will allocate 5 million rubles to support indigenous peoples of the North. Among other things, the company will help equip an open-air museum in Murmansk, according to the company's 2021 sustainability report.
Norilsk Nickel closely cooperates with organizations representing the interests of the Indigenous Peoples of the North in the territories where the company operates. At the same time, we make sure that decisions are transparent and that joint projects are as effective as possible,” said Vladimir Potanin, President of Norilsk Nickel.
In addition, the company will support the creation of a unified Sami alphabet and the publication of manuals for pre-school education in the Sami language.
According to the All-Russian Population Census of 2010, 1,599 Sami and 226 people belonging to other small peoples of the North live in the Murmansk region. The main places of traditional residence and traditional economic activity of the Sami of the Murmansk region include the Kovdorsky district (112 people), the Kola district (201 people) and the Lovozersky district (873 people).
